otestants, thought that the ceremony was symbolic and holy and "unless a man means to call God a deceiver, he would never dare assert that an empty symbol is set forth by him."
And today I was delivering to that same hippie restaurant. I had my hand truck loaded fuller than I probably should have and I dropped a crate of strawberries. Many scattered on the floor (which was clean. After a washing they’ll be fine. Unlike all the ginger I had to recall today because of the tainted ginger from China. My boss tells me they executed the head of their food and drug administration over it but they didn’t say anything about that on NPR. So I don’t know if that really happened.) Some guy came out of the restaurant and started helping me pick them up. I thanked him and offered to buy him a smoothie. He declined and said I should just consider it an act of kindness. I told him I would endeavor to go forth and do likewise.
Zwingli came up with the Memorialist view of Communion. He thought that Communion was, as Christ instructs, meant to be taken in memory of Christ. I tend to fall more toward Calvin’s holy but entirely symbolic sacrament. With apologies to my Catholic friends, I don’t really think things turn into other things when I take Communion. But I also totally get Luther’s insistence on how sacred the event is for the believer. But then I also get Zwingli’s take. That is to say that it is important that I remember the Jesus who said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind and, likewise, to love your neighbor as yourself.
